Summer means longer days, more time outdoors, and increased sun exposure. Whether you're spending the day at the beach, hiking, or simply running errands, sunscreen is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your skin.
At SVIA Plastic Surgery & Med Spa, we encourage our patients to wear sunscreen every day, not just during the summer. But what does SPF actually mean, and why does the number matter? Let's break it down.
What Does SPF Stand For?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how well a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, the type of ultraviolet light primarily responsible for sunburn and a major contributor to skin cancer.
SPF measures the level of protection provided compared to wearing no sunscreen at all.
For example:
-
SPF 15 blocks about 93% of UVB rays.
-
SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays.
-
SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays.
-
SPF 100 blocks about 99% of UVB rays.
While higher SPF offers slightly more protection, no sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays. Proper application and regular reapplication are just as important as choosing the right SPF.
What Does SPF 50 Actually Mean?
Many people assume SPF 50 provides twice the protection of SPF 25—but that's not exactly how it works. The number refers to how well sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn.
For example, SPF 25 blocks about 96% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. The "50" refers to the level of protection measured during testing, meaning SPF 50 allows significantly less UVB radiation to reach your skin compared to wearing no sunscreen.
However, SPF 50 does not mean you can stay in the sun 50 times longer without reapplying. Sunscreen effectiveness decreases with sweating, swimming, towel drying, and everyday activities. To maintain protection, apply sunscreen generously and reapply every two hours when outdoors.
Don't Forget About UVA Rays
While SPF measures protection against UVB rays, UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to long-term skin damage.
UVA exposure can contribute to:
-
Premature aging
-
Wrinkles and fine lines
-
Hyperpigmentation and sun spots
-
Loss of collagen
-
Increased skin cancer risk
For complete protection, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which helps protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.
How Often Should You Reapply Sunscreen?
One of the most common sunscreen mistakes is applying it once in the morning and forgetting about it.
For the best protection:
-
Apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes before going outside.
-
Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors.
-
Reapply immediately after swimming, sweating heavily, or towel drying.
-
Remember that UV rays can still reach your skin on cloudy days.
If you spend much of your day indoors but sit near windows or drive frequently, daily sunscreen is still recommended because UVA rays can penetrate glass.
How Much Sunscreen Should You Use?
Many people don't apply enough sunscreen to receive the full protection listed on the bottle.
A good rule of thumb:
-
Use enough sunscreen to generously cover your face, neck, and exposed areas.
-
For the body, most adults need approximately one ounce (about the size of a shot glass) for full coverage.
Applying too little sunscreen can significantly reduce the level of protection you receive.
Sunscreen Is Your Best Anti-Aging Product
Daily sunscreen doesn't just help prevent sunburn—it also protects your long-term skin health.
Regular sunscreen use helps reduce:
-
Fine lines and wrinkles
-
Uneven skin tone
-
Dark spots and sun damage
-
Loss of skin elasticity
-
Future skin cancer risk
It's one of the simplest and most effective investments you can make for healthy, youthful-looking skin.
