Dr. Tom S. Liu graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa from Northwestern University. He went on to complete a competitive 5 year dual MD-MBA program at the University of Chicago, receiving his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and his MBA degree from the Booth School of Business.
A Passion for Altruism and Care
While at the University of Chicago, Dr. Liu discovered his passion for plastic surgery during a medical mission to Puerto Rico to help reconstruct children with congenital deformities. Combining his love for medicine and his business knowledge, Dr. Liu worked on philanthropic medical ventures culminating the fundraising of $10,000 for a Puerto Rican foundation specializing in pediatric reconstructive plastic surgery. Dr. Liu graduated from the University of Chicago with Honors and was a nominee for the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.
Board Certification
Dr. Liu is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only board that certifies plastic surgeons, and is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Dr. Liu has authored many manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, such as Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Annals of Plastic Surgery, and book chapters involving topics in breast reconstruction, microsurgery, facelift surgery, and the economics of plastic surgery procedures.
Dr. Liu has also presented his works at society meetings. His research has been featured and quoted by the New York Times and NBC.
Dr. Liu’s Continued Education
Dr. Tom Liu was matched at the prestigious UCLA Medical Center (ranked “Best in the West” by US News and World Reports) for the highly competitive combined general surgery-plastic surgery program (only one position per year). While at UCLA, Dr. Liu developed a strong interest in aesthetic plastic surgery and microvascular surgery.
After finishing his plastic surgery training at UCLA, Dr. Liu dedicated an extra year of sub-specialty fellowship training at the Plastic Surgery Institute in San Francisco, one of the only fellowships that offer combined training in aesthetic surgery and advanced microsurgery.
During this year, Dr. Liu worked extensively with world-renowned plastic surgeons and learned specialized techniques in aesthetic facial plastic surgery, breast and body aesthetic plastic surgery, injectables, and microsurgery with a focus on breast reconstruction.
Aesthetic and Personal Philosophies
Dr. Liu has an aesthetic philosophy grounded in producing natural long-lasting results for his patients. Dr. Liu believes in the restoration and preservation of youth rather than transformation through surgery. Dr. Liu provides his patients with an individualized and thorough aesthetic analysis while utilizing advanced surgical and non-surgical procedures to create optimal results.
When he is out of office, Dr. Liu enjoys culinary exploration by discovering new flavors through cooking and trying diverse cuisines. Dr. Liu enjoys outdoor activities like cycling, skiing, and hiking with his dogs. Dr. Liu is married to a dermatologist and is a proud father.
